Doug’s practice at GVM focuses on business and real estate structures and transactions.  His goal is simple – to provide his clients with a straightforward and cost-effective approach to obtaining the desired result.  In doing so, Doug utilizes his past experience as a litigator to guide his clients and help them better understand the issues that often surface when deals and relationships do not go as planned.  “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  If I can get my clients from A to B in an efficient but mindful manner, then I have done my job.”

Business, ranging from formation of limited liability companies and corporations to private securities offerings, is the central component of Doug’s practice at GVM.  From there, Doug works with his clients in drafting and negotiating business deals, service and employment agreements, real estate purchase and sale agreements, leases, tenancy-in-common agreements, promissory notes, and other general contracts.

Doug is a native of California with ties to Sacramento, Monterey, and wine country.  More specifically, Doug grew up in Folsom and spent all of his summers playing middle infield on baseball diamonds throughout the Sacramento region.  After graduating from Folsom High School, he attended Sonoma State University where he majored in economics and minored in business administration.  He graduated cum laude and with distinction in three and a half years.

Doug obtained his law degree from UC Davis.  While at Davis, Doug bolstered his undergraduate background by taking courses in business formation and governance, finance, real property, and contracts.  Following graduation, Doug practiced law for almost three years in Monterey as both a transactional attorney and a litigator before moving to Napa.  “The decision to leave Monterey was difficult but ultimately, I wanted to make a shift from fighting over broken deals to helping my clients start new, healthy, and well-thought-out relationships.”

Doug practiced law and learned from the firm’s seasoned business, real estate, and wine team for over two years in GVM’s Napa office before transitioning to the firm’s Roseville office.  He is now a primary component of GVM’s Roseville team.  “Transferring to the Roseville office presented a great opportunity for me to reconnect with my home and enhance my practice by drawing upon the talent and expertise of a 40+ year attorney in Frank Martorana.  All the while, I get to continue my fantastic relationship with the Napa office and provide ongoing services to existing and new Napa clients.  Truly a win-win.”

Doug and his family live in El Dorado Hills.  When he is not practicing law, Doug enjoys working with his hands on home improvement projects, working out, playing sports, traveling, watching football, wrestling the dog, playing with the cat, and enjoying a glass of wine or a craft beer.  Doug’s favorite thing, however, is spending time with his wife, Chrissy, and their son, Decklan.
